Rhodes Old Town
The Old Town of Rhodes is the oldest town in Rhodes that have been continuously occupied by different civilizations and thus it has been designated as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. It is one of the major tourist spots on the Island of Rhodes, due to its rich history, scenic beaches and ideal weather.
The old town can be accessed by any of the seven gates, as this city is surrounded by walls. It is recommended to opt for a private car service to travel to the old town to reduce time delays and stress, as approximately 600 taxis cater the needs of the tourists visiting this Island. No vehicular traffic is permitted inside the walls, and the rest of the journey has to be undertaken on foot. The following places are must-visit sites at the Rhodes Old Town:
The Archaeological Museum:
The Museum is located in the medieval building of the Hospital of Knights. The foundation of this building was laid down in 1440 by Grand Master de Lastic, and completed in 1489. This is a treat for historians as it features various tombs and sculptures from the Geometric and Classical periods.
The Knight’s Street:
This street has seven Knight Inns or lodges that represent the seven countries that the Knights came from. At the end of this street is the Palace of the Grand Masters. This palace was built on the site of the Byzantine fortress by the Knights of St. John from Jerusalem. This castle has been restored as a museum with exhibits from Greece in the lower half, while the upper half has been restored to its full Italian glory, with modern amenities.
Socrates Street old Bazaar:
Apart from the traditional buildings and historical sites; the Old Town of Rhodes offers much modern and lively place to visit. The Socrates Street hosts a large number of restaurants, cafes, bars and shopping places.
